Hiring an Admin Assistant: Leading and Managing

What’s covered in this learning:

If you’ve never been “the boss” before, it can feel like a funny position. And even if you have, the work environment may have been so toxic it’s hard to know how to do it in a healthy way.

Here is the teaching video for the third class, it’s a little longer than the others at 24 minutes.

You may want pen and paper, other ways of taking notes and recording insights. Pause as much as you need to!

There are two PDFs for the Class 3 video is here.

Questions and Answers will be posted after the call.

1.Kristi- I’m getting the over all understanding, but now I’m trying to manage the person- I handed over the project, but I haven’t heard/seen anything.

2. Dorothy- Trepidation from experience in handing over in volunteer situations- providing too much information, so there can be a resistance to follow the details.

3. Camille- To get help I need to share passwords.

4. Camille- the time it takes to do things.

5. Kristi- Recommendations for other tools?

Your assignment:

  1. Watch the video, and read the PDFs.
  2. Attend the Q&A call (or listen to the answers once they are posted here).
  3. Take the time to find your own relationship to hiring an administrative assistant.
  4. Answer the questions.

You might find it helpful to open up a Google Doc, or another file, or even in a paper notebook (gasp!) and answer the questions there, so you can track your progress.

Questions:

  • For the project you want to delegate, what is the final outcome you are hoping for? What will it look like when it’s done?
  • What date do you need it by? If there’s no external pressure for a date, what date would you *like* it by?
  • What information/access is needed to accomplish the project? (Passwords? Files? Etc.)
  • Where does this project fit in the overall picture of your business? What is the intention in terms of making the business easier to run or more profitable?
  • What are any important considerations in terms of how it’s done? Details that are non-negotiable, that must happen? Details that can be changed or omitted?
  • Any other insights or learnings?
